Quatuor Vélasquez, Helena Cueto, Guillermo Guillén
"Neither Music would be what it is nor would the modern orchestra sound as it sounds if the influence of cante jondo did not exist."
- Manuel de Falla, 1922
In 1911 Joaquin Turina, Sevillian composer, lives in Paris; he likes to remember the sevillan nights spent listening to and seeing the cantaores (singers), tocaores (guitarists) and bailaores (dancers) of flamenco in the cantantes cafes of the city (sort of flamenco cabarets of the 1930s). It was then that he composed Cuarteto n ° 1 op 4 “de la guitarra” for string quartet drawing on popular Spanish music and especially flamenco.

Noche en Sevilla
‘Noche en Sevilla’ is a dialogue between dance and flamenco music, and classical music. Joaquin Turina’s Quartet op.4 ‘de la guitarra”, inspired by popular Spanish music, and in particular flamenco, is proving to be a formidable success alongside flamenco musicians. Some of Turina’s themes call for dance, song and flamenco guitar, and seem to have been composed to meet one night in Seville.
