"Neither Music would be what it is nor would the modern orchestra sound as it sounds if the influence of cante jondo did not exist." - Manuel de Falla, 1922
In 1911 Joaquin Turina, Sevillian composer, lives in Paris; he likes to remember the sevillan nights spent listening to and seeing the cantaores (singers), tocaores (guitarists) and bailaores (dancers) of flamenco in the cantantes cafes of the city (sort of flamenco cabarets of the 1930s). It was then that he composed Cuarteto n ° 1 op 4 “de la guitarra” for string quartet drawing on popular Spanish music and especially flamenco.
